Met Office Issues Yellow Wind Warning for 15 Areas in Somerset on Christmas Day

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for Christmas Day affecting several areas across Somerset and the broader South West region. Although a white Christmas is unlikely, the forecast warns of strong winds and cold temperatures that may disrupt travel and daily activities on December 25.

The wind warning is active from 4 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on Christmas Day and covers parts of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, and some areas in Wales. Notably, towns like Bath, Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Chard, and Glastonbury fall just outside the yellow zone, though they may still experience gusty conditions.

Meteorologists predict east to northeasterly winds becoming particularly strong, with peak gusts ranging between 45-55 mph in many areas and reaching 55-65 mph along exposed coastlines and west of prominent hills. These unusual wind patterns could lead to transport delays, power outages, and large waves along the coast.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued a cold weather health alert for the South West, warning that the chilly conditions from 6 p.m. on Christmas Day through noon on December 27 could increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. The cold weather may place additional strain on health and social care services.

While much of the public transport network will not be operating on Christmas Day, those planning to travel should remain cautious of potential disruptions caused by the wind and cold weather. Residents along the coast should also be prepared for hazardous sea conditions and power interruptions due to the severe weather.
