Met Office Issues Yellow Weather Warning Ahead of Strong Winds and Disruptions

The Met Office has issued a 12-hour yellow weather warning for strong winds, forecasting widespread disruption across parts of Somerset and the South West from 4am to 4pm on Tuesday, January 20.

Travel delays are expected throughout the day as south-easterly winds strengthen, bringing gusts of up to 65 mph, especially over exposed hills and coastal areas. Coastal communities should prepare for large waves and sea spray, posing additional hazards.

The warning highlights a band of heavy rain moving east across the South West, accompanied by gusty winds ranging from 45 to 65 mph. These conditions may lead to temporary power outages and interruptions to other essential services.

A Met Office spokesperson advised: “Strong and gusty winds will affect the region Tuesday morning, with the highest gusts near high ground and coastlines. Travel disruption is likely, so check road conditions and public transport timetables before setting off.”

Residents are urged to prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and phone chargers. Those near the coast should exercise caution around cliffs and be aware that large waves can sweep people into the sea, even from the shore. Keep dogs on leads and always have a clear route planned.

In case of emergencies, contact 999 and ask for the Coastguard. The Met Office recommends staying updated with the latest weather forecasts as conditions can change rapidly during the warning period.
