Met Office Issues Yellow Ice Warning for South West England Amid Icy Travel Conditions

The Met Office has issued a yellow ice warning for South West England, effective until 10 a.m. on Friday, January 2. Patchy frost and icy surfaces are expected, increasing the risk of travel disruption and accidents across the region.

Forecasters report that showers falling onto already cold surfaces have created icy patches, particularly on untreated roads and pavements. These hazardous conditions are likely to lead to slips, falls, and dangerous driving scenarios. The Met Office advises residents and travelers to plan extra time for journeys and exercise caution on the roads.

Road travel is predicted to be heavy, with the AA forecasting around 20.7 million car journeys across the UK on Friday. Delays and disruptions to public transport services, including buses and trains, are also expected due to the wintry conditions.

The cold spell is forecast to persist into the weekend and next week, with further weather warnings possible as temperatures stay well below average and snow showers continue in some areas. The Met Office emphasizes the importance of checking road conditions and travel updates before setting out.

Additionally, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued warnings valid until January 6, highlighting the increased health risks posed by cold weather, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. The agency warns of a potential rise in health complications and fatalities during this period.

Residents are urged to take precautionary measures to stay safe and adapt their travel plans as necessary amidst this challenging weather.
