The Met Office has issued a “yellow” rain warning for eight areas in South West England, including Somerset, as well as 23 regions across the United Kingdom. This alert, effective from 5am to 11:59pm on Thursday, February 5, cautions residents to prepare for heavy downpours and possible flooding.
Rain is expected to arrive from the south overnight Wednesday into Thursday and become heavy and persistent during Thursday morning. Following a brief pause, another system of organized, intense rainfall is predicted to return later in the day, particularly impacting the same regions.
Forecasters anticipate between 10 to 20mm of rain across wide areas by the end of Thursday, with some locations potentially experiencing more than 30mm. The already saturated ground raises concerns over low-impact surface water flooding, which could lead to difficult driving conditions due to spray, flowing water, or flooded roads.

South West England, which suffered significant damage earlier this year from storms including Storm Chandra, remains vulnerable. The current warnings cover eight areas within this region.
Other parts of the UK under yellow rain warnings include London and South East England, Wales, the West Midlands, Central Scotland, Tayside and Fife, and Grampian.
Residents in these areas are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and exercise caution while travelling.
