Met Office Issues Rain Warning for Somerset

The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain expected to batter Somerset and the South West today. The weather warning will be in effect from noon today until midday on Wednesday. Anticipated heavy rainfall is likely to disrupt road and rail transport, making conditions hazardous.

The Met Office has cautioned that a spell of heavy and persistent rain is expected to move north across western Britain during Tuesday into early Wednesday. There is uncertainty about where the heaviest rain will fall, but 20-40 mm of rainfall is expected widely. Some areas may see 50-75 mm of rain, causing potential flooding and transportation disruptions, particularly in the west. Residents are being advised to prepare for travel delays, longer bus and train service times, and increased journey times due to spray and flooding on the roads.

In light of potential flooding threats and power supply interruptions, individuals are being urged to check if their property could be at risk of flooding and prepare a flood plan and an emergency flood kit, while travelers should stay updated to minimize disruptions and adjust their plans accordingly.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert highlighted the transition from dry, sunny weather to gloomier and unsettled conditions. The low-pressure system near Portugal is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to the UK. The yellow warning for rain covers southwest England, Wales, and the northwest of England, with further wet conditions anticipated on Thursday and another weather front moving in on Friday.
