Met Office Issues Rain Warning as Somerset Faces Flood Risks

The Met Office has issued a new rain warning for the South West, with Somerset expected to experience heavy rainfall on Thursday, January 22. The alert is active from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., signaling potential disruptions due to persistent wet weather.

Forecasters predict frequent showers and sustained periods of heavy rain throughout the day. Rainfall amounts between 5 to 15 mm are expected over several hours, with some locations receiving up to 20 mm. Due to already saturated ground, this intense rainfall raises the risk of localized flooding and significant travel disruption in the region.

The Met Office warns that the downpours are likely to cause delays and cancellations for public transport services, including buses and trains. Motorists are also cautioned that driving conditions will be hazardous, with water spray and potential flooding affecting road safety. It is advisable for drivers to check their routes before departure and allow extra travel time.

Somerset’s chance of rain remains above 95% through much of the morning, particularly heavy between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., gradually easing to a 60% chance by late afternoon when the yellow warning is lifted. Alongside the rain, some breezy spells are expected, with wind speeds reaching up to 13 mph.

Temperatures will be slightly milder compared to recent days, with highs around 9°C and lows near 3°C. Residents and travelers in Somerset should prepare for the challenging weather and stay informed as conditions develop.
