Met Office Issues Flood Warnings as Heavy Rain Hits Somerset and 22 Other UK Areas

The Met Office has issued a “yellow” weather warning for rain, signaling potential surface water flooding in eight areas of South West England, including Somerset, alongside 22 other affected regions across the United Kingdom.

Effective from 5am to 11:59pm on Thursday, February 5, these warnings alert residents to expect periods of persistent rain and heavy showers, which may lead to localized flooding and challenging travel conditions.

Rain is forecast to arrive from the south overnight Wednesday into Thursday, intensifying during Thursday morning before easing briefly. However, further heavy, organized rain is expected later in the day, particularly affecting the same areas. By the end of Thursday, rainfall totals are anticipated to reach 10-20mm across much of the region, with some locations possibly experiencing over 30mm.

The Met Office emphasizes that, due to already saturated ground, surface water flooding is likely in low-lying areas. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, as spray, flowing water, and flooded roads may cause hazardous conditions.

This alert follows severe weather in January when Storm Chandra brought heavy rains and widespread flooding to South West England, leaving lasting impacts.

In addition to South West England, other regions under yellow rain warnings on Thursday include London and South East England, Wales, the West Midlands, Central Scotland, Tayside, Fife, and Grampian.
