The Met Office has issued a severe 21-hour weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall as the UK’s recent heatwave draws to an end. This alert, which covers parts of the South West including Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, warns of up to 90mm of rain falling in just a few hours, raising the risk of flooding, travel chaos, and power outages.
The warning starts at 9pm on Friday, July 18, and remains in effect until 6pm on Saturday, July 19. The Met Office advises that heavy, thundery showers could cause widespread disruption to transport and travel throughout this period.
Flooding and standing water may create hazardous driving conditions and could force road closures, with delays expected for bus and train services. Additionally, buildings could sustain damage from floodwaters, lightning strikes, hailstorms, and strong winds, according to Gloucestershire Live.

The Met Office further explains that “thundery rain will initially move into the southern parts of the warning area late on Friday, spreading northwards across much of England on Saturday.” Many areas may experience intense rainfall, with 20-30mm falling in less than an hour and some locations potentially seeing 60-90mm within three hours.
Rainfall is expected to clear from the south by early Saturday afternoon, but additional thunderstorms are forecast to develop, bringing frequent lightning, strong gusts, and large hail.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly cautions that “more warnings could be issued for the weekend and early next week,” advising the public to monitor forecasts as conditions evolve. He also notes that temperatures could climb to 30°C or higher in parts of eastern England on Friday, with warm and muggy weather persisting into the weekend in central and southern regions.
South West forecast highlights include:
Tonight: The east will see largely dry conditions with some late sunshine and clear spells overnight. Meanwhile, the west will experience returning cloud cover, hill fog, and occasional light rain. Temperatures will remain warm and muggy, with lows around 16°C.
Friday: Morning clouds will give way to sunny intervals and mostly dry conditions, though a stray shower is possible. Coastal areas will feel a gentle breeze, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 26°C.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Unsettled weather is expected with heavy, gusty showers, possible thunderstorms, and hail. Warm and humid conditions will continue when the sun is out, but frequent rain will keep temperatures cooler.
Residents in affected areas are urged to stay alert and follow Met Office updates as the situation develops.
