Met Office forecasts sub-zero temperatures and potential snow for Somerset

Residents of Somerset are bracing themselves for a significant drop in temperatures this weekend, with the Met Office forecasting the coldest night of the year so far. After experiencing unseasonably warm weather for much of November, the South West is set to face a cold front that could bring snow to the Scottish Highlands and the highest points of England and Wales.

Projections from both Netweather.tv and the Met Office suggest that temperatures in Somerset could plummet to as low as -1C, with some areas in Wales and the rural South West facing even lower temperatures of -4C and -5C respectively.

Met Office town-by-town forecasts indicate that Taunton could see temperatures as low as 1C, while Yeovil and Bridgwater may experience sub-zero temperatures of around -1C. The daytime highs are expected to range from 5-6C across the region.

Saturday is anticipated to mark the coldest night of the year nationwide, with sub-zero temperatures predicted. Daytime temperatures are unlikely to reach double digits, in line with the typical variable weather expected during this time of year.

According to Jim Dale, a Senior Meteorological Consultant at British Weather Services, the cold weather is likely to persist until the end of the month, with the potential for sporadic snow in Scotland, Wales, and the Pennines. Further south, snow is expected to hit London and the southeast on December 5, with additional snow showers forecasted until December 9.

Today, Somerset is poised to experience a dry yet overcast morning, with cloud cover gradually diminishing throughout the day. This will pave the way for hazy sunshine and calmer winds, with a maximum temperature of 10°C. Tonight, the region will see widespread frost, with temperatures expected to plummet to -2°C.

Looking ahead to Saturday, the day is expected to remain mostly dry with hazy sunshine, although isolated showers may occur over higher ground. Sunday will bring another frosty start, with potential showers moving in from the west later in the day. Overnight rain is anticipated, followed by showers on Monday before transitioning back to dry and calm conditions by Tuesday.
