Met Office forecasts exact date first snow of season will fall in Somerset

The Met Office has announced its forecast for the first snowfall in Somerset of the season, which is expected to arrive sooner than anticipated. Projections indicate that the first snow is set to arrive in the Somerset hills towards the end of the month, with temperatures expected to reach a chilly -1C.

The recent rapid drop in mercury levels is expected to continue, with even colder weather predicted for next week. According to Met Office meteorologists, temperatures could plummet to as low as -5C in rural parts of southern England, with a possibility of snow over higher ground.

The current forecast suggests that snow will arrive overnight in Somerset on Thursday, November 30, with flurries expected between 3am and 9am over Dunkery Beacon. Additionally, brief wintery showers may occur over parts of Exmoor and the Quantock Hills from as soon as this weekend, as indicated by the Met Office weather map. However, these are likely to be short-lived.

As of now, these are the only parts of the county forecasted for snow by the Met Office. However, with colder than average conditions expected at the turn of the month, the likelihood of further snow is ‘increasing’. Dan Harris, the Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, mentioned that “early next week, following a brief more unsettled interlude, we expect to see a return to widely cold but quiet conditions.”

Harris also highlighted the uncertainty in the detailed forecast beyond mid-week, emphasizing the possibility of more unsettled weather patterns. He stated that “a continuation of colder than average conditions seems most likely,” and that more details will become clear over the coming days, with the Met Office closely monitoring developments in the forecast.
