It has been 30 years since Melanie Hall, aged 25, vanished after a night out at a nightclub in Bath. Her disappearance remained a haunting mystery until her remains were discovered more than a decade later.
Melanie was last seen on June 8, 1996, but for years neither her family nor police knew what had happened. In 2009, a workman found her body beside the M5 motorway’s northbound slip road near Thornbury. The investigation revealed she had suffered severe head injuries and was wrapped in black bin liners, bound with blue rope.
Detective Chief Inspector Ben Lavender, leading the Avon and Somerset Police investigation, described the case as one of the force’s longest running and most high-profile inquiries. Hundreds of officers have been involved in trying to bring justice to Melanie and her family.

As the 30th anniversary approaches, the ‘Justice for Melanie’ campaign appeals to the public: take a moment to recall that night, June 8, 1996—a typical evening out in Bath. Any small detail or memory, no matter how minor, could be the key to solving this case.
DCI Lavender added, “Melanie’s family have endured unimaginable pain and uncertainty for three decades, showing remarkable courage throughout. Our commitment remains steadfast to deliver the justice and answers they deserve.”
To aid the investigation, Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Melanie’s murder. Anyone with knowledge is urged to come forward.
