The development of a substantial solar farm in Somerset, capable of powering 18,000 homes, has taken a significant step forward with the submission of a planning application. Belltown Power has formally applied to North Somerset Council for permission to establish the Oldbridge Solar Farm.
The proposed project aims to install a 40 MW AC solar farm across approximately 227 acres to the west of Congresbury. If approved, the solar installation would generate enough renewable electricity to meet the annual energy demands of around 18,000 households for the next 40 years.
Agricultural activities on the site would continue, with sheep grazing integrated into the landscape management. The plans emphasize environmental sustainability and biodiversity, including new hedgerow and tree planting, wildflower meadows, protected rhynes, bird boxes, bee hives, and insect hotels, all designed to enhance local wildlife habitats.

Additionally, the project includes a community and education fund valued at approximately £790,000 over its lifespan. This fund aims to support local groups, sustainable initiatives, educational programs, and improvements to community facilities. An outdoor classroom and picnic area will also be developed for the use of local schools and residents.
Antoine Vandenborre from Belltown Power commented, “We’re proud to present a proposal that addresses the critical need for clean energy while providing lasting benefits to the local community and environment. Oldbridge Solar Farm is designed to be a responsible and positive asset to the area for decades to come, enhancing biodiversity and supporting community development.”
