Heartwarming photos have captured Pam, one of the tiniest ponies ever born in the UK, measuring a mere 24 inches tall. This Shetland foal arrived at Glenda Spooner Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Somerset weighing just 17kg — about the same as a springer spaniel.
Pam made her debut at the rescue centre this summer and has quickly become a standout among the foals born over the centre’s 20-year history. Staff are now looking for a loving home for Pam and her mother Sophie, who had been rescued while pregnant in September 2024.
Despite her small size, Pam’s spirited personality shines through. Amy McCormack, Yard Supervisor at Glenda Spooner Farm, describes her as “an absolute sweetheart” who is “teeny tiny but full of personality.” By one month old, Pam was 22 inches tall and weighed 31kg — still the size of a large dog compared to other foals, who typically weigh twice as much.
Visitors have been enchanted by Pam’s charm, and interest in adopting her is already high. “Everyone wants Pam,” adds Amy, “and we expect a lot of disappointed people when she eventually leaves.”
Pam’s mother Sophie was rescued last year alongside several other wary ponies. Thanks to dedicated care, they have all blossomed into confident, happy animals settled into much better lives. Pam’s birth in July, safe and surrounded by love, marks a hopeful new chapter for the family.
The Shetland pony breed, originating from Scotland’s Shetland Islands, is known for its small stature and resilience. Among the tiniest known Shetlands was Pumuckel from Germany, standing around 20 inches tall and weighing 35 kg at age three.
Glenda Spooner Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre invites visitors on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays to meet the ponies, enjoy coffee, and explore the beautiful farmgrounds.
