Meet Alfie Quayson: Two Decades of Dedication to Bath’s Homeless Community

For twenty years, Alfie Quayson has been a steadfast presence in Bath’s fight against homelessness. Beginning his journey in 2006 as a night concierge at Julian House, Alfie has witnessed profound changes in the challenges faced by those sleeping rough, as well as in the services designed to support them.

Reflecting on the transformation, Alfie shares, “In 2014, the hostel underwent a complete renovation that replaced shared dormitories with private pods for each client. This upgrade greatly improved the environment for both residents and staff.”

The need for such improvements has been urgent. Alfie highlights, “Demand has increased massively over recent years. We’re constantly operating at full capacity, and many clients deal with complex issues that can be difficult to manage.”

Despite the challenges, Alfie remains passionate about his work. “I love the job and the people – there’s always something meaningful to do.”

Julian House continues its vital role, offering 21 beds for rough sleepers on Manvers Street in Bath’s city centre. In 2025, the hostel supported 130 individuals experiencing homelessness in the area.

Government data confirms the extent of the issue: while rough sleeping rates in Bath & North East Somerset remained relatively stable from 2024 to 2025, the numbers highlight an ongoing crisis.

Helen Bedser, Chief Executive of Julian House, praises Alfie’s unwavering dedication: “Alfie’s commitment is simply outstanding. Having someone with his passion and experience is invaluable to our mission. His work exemplifies what compassion and resilience truly mean.”

The celebration of Alfie’s milestone coincides with the announcement of a new day centre for homeless individuals on Corn Street, currently under construction. This initiative will provide a safe daytime space for Bath’s rough sleepers.

Helen explains, “Securing the lease extension for this centre is a significant achievement. With rough sleeping at an all-time high across England, offering a daytime refuge in Bath is crucial. This centre will complement local efforts by partners like Genesis Trust and will greatly enhance support for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.”
