As winter approaches, Christmas lovers, history enthusiasts, and travelers alike have a unique opportunity to step back in time at one of England’s rare medieval manors. Nestled in the picturesque county of Somerset, Lytes Cary Manor is celebrated for its exquisite Arts and Crafts-style gardens and is set to host an enchanting Christmas market this holiday season.
The market takes place within the manor’s beautifully restored barns and courtyard, offering visitors an intimate and traditional festive experience. Guests can browse an array of locally crafted goods and artworks by regional artisans in a setting steeped in history. Entry to the market itself is free, though a small fee applies for those wishing to explore the manor house, tea room, and the surrounding romantic gardens.
Family-friendly and welcoming to all ages, the National Trust recommends dressing warmly to enjoy the outdoor spaces comfortably. While the terrain is mostly flat and accessible, visitors should note that the gravel-covered courtyards may present some mobility challenges for wheelchair users.

Lytes Cary Manor boasts a rich history dating back to 1286 when it was granted to William le Lyte under a feudal tenancy—a tradition where wealthy lords exchanged low rent for loyal service. The estate was once home to Henry Lyte, noted for translating the herbal remedy classic, Niewe Herball. The Lyte family maintained ownership for centuries.
The manor underwent significant restoration in the 20th century under Sir Walter Jenner. Upon the untimely death of his daughter Esme, he generously entrusted the estate to the National Trust in 1948. Since then, caretakers Jeremy and Biddy Chittenden have lovingly nurtured the gardens for over four decades.
Today, the manor showcases an array of garden rooms with herbaceous borders and beautifully sculpted topiary, providing visitors with a peaceful, scenic walk along the River Cary.
The upcoming Christmas market is scheduled for November 22 and 23, 2025, open daily from 10 am to 3 pm. For those eager to visit earlier, Lytes Cary Manor’s spooky Halloween Trail runs from October 25 to November 2, operating from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
