The Taunton branch of Mecca Bingo, a key entertainment venue in Somerset’s county town, is on the verge of potential closure. This follows decisions by the chain to evaluate locations in the South West that are nearing the end of their lease agreements and require costly maintenance.
Located prominently on Corporation Street, the venue occupies a historic building that once housed the Gaumont Theatre, later transformed into the Odeon Cinema during the 1960s before becoming a bingo hall.
A spokesperson for Mecca Bingo confirmed that the company is facing “difficult decisions” to maintain a viable portfolio of vibrant community clubs. Alongside Taunton, the Exeter branch in Devon is also under review for closure after being deemed economically unfeasible.

Mecca is currently engaging in consultations with affected staff members, with a final decision expected by early June, according to Devon Live.
In an official statement, the spokesperson explained, “The proposed closures relate to venues that have not been commercially viable for some time. Our leases on both Exeter and Taunton are ending, and significant maintenance is needed, making continued operations challenging. We are committed to sustaining a strong estate of community clubs and are consulting with colleagues during this difficult process.”
Despite the looming uncertainty, Taunton’s venue remains popular among bingo enthusiasts. Recent reviews highlight its appeal, though some maintenance concerns have been noted. A customer who posted last month mentioned that many visitors travel over 40 miles to attend, enjoying games and meals there. However, issues such as hot water shortages and temporarily out-of-order toilets were reported.
The coming weeks will determine the future of this beloved bingo hall that has long been a social hub for the local community.
