Somerset Council recently declined further measures to prevent unauthorised traveller encampments on Stoney Furlong Field, a green space in Taunton, less than 24 hours before eight caravans moved onto the site.
Located west of Nerrols Drive in the Priorswood area, near Nerrols Primary School, Stoney Furlong Field has seen repeated traveller incursions. After a summer 2025 encampment, the council installed bollards as a deterrent. However, at a recent executive committee meeting, Taunton North division member Tom Deakin requested additional protections such as stone boulders or earth mounds.
Council officials responded that the bollards appeared effective and no further measures were planned at this time. Council leader Bill Revans emphasized that since the bollards’ installation, no encampments had occurred, signalling their success. He added the situation would continue to be monitored and further action taken if needed.

Despite these assurances, at least eight caravans arrived on May 7, having relocated from Greenway Recreation Ground on Leslie Avenue. Some travellers have since left the site following notices served by Somerset Council.
Councillor Giuseppe Fraschini, representing Maidenbrook ward, confirmed plans to review and implement additional prevention measures once the site is vacated. He also mentioned that Somerset Council is preparing a business case to establish a dedicated traveller site in Taunton, which would enhance the council’s ability to manage unauthorised encampments swiftly.
Mr Deakin expressed deep disappointment at the encroachment, noting damage to the bollards and fencing allowing access. He reaffirmed his commitment to pushing for stronger, long-term solutions to safeguard this valued community green space and protect local residents' interests.
