McLaren Begins Construction of Major Logistics Hub at Former Honda Site

McLaren Construction (Midlands & North) has embarked on a significant project to develop a 545,000 sq ft logistics and distribution centre on the former Honda plant site in Swindon. This marks McLaren’s first collaboration with developer Panattoni in the South West region, underscoring the company’s expanding footprint.

The new facility, known as Unit 4, is being constructed on the brownfield site that Honda vacated in 2021. This state-of-the-art warehouse will feature two floors of office space, a decked car park, upgraded road infrastructure, service yards, and extensive landscaping.

The steel framework is complete, and roofing and cladding installations are progressing rapidly, with project completion slated for January 2026.

Sustainability is at the heart of the design, with the building on course to achieve BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification. The office areas aim for an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A+, while the warehouse targets an A rating. The project also strives for net zero upfront carbon emissions, with a strict goal of less than 300 kgCO₂ per square metre.

This redevelopment is part of Panattoni’s wider initiative to revitalize the historic site, once an airfield during World War II and later transformed by Honda.

Key collaborators include UMC Architects, KAM Project Consultants, BWB Consulting, Construction CDM Services, and C3 Design Approvals, all contributing to various aspects of design, quantity surveying, engineering, and compliance.

Luke Arnold, regional director at McLaren Midlands & North, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “This flagship industrial project in Swindon highlights our commitment to sustainable construction and regional growth. We are dedicated to delivering on Panattoni’s vision and meeting an accelerated timeline.”

Once complete, Panattoni Park Swindon will offer premier industrial facilities with excellent transport connectivity, bolstering Swindon’s status as a key logistics hub.
