Matt Weston Secures Team GB’s First Winter Olympics Gold with Historic Men’s Skeleton Win

Matt Weston has etched his name into British sporting history by winning Team GB’s first gold medal of this Winter Olympics in the men’s skeleton event. The dual world champion dominated the competition from the outset, breaking track records with his first two runs at the Cortina Sliding Centre in Italy.

On Friday, Weston completed his final two heats with a combined time of 1 minute 52.09 seconds, finishing 0.3 seconds ahead of Germany’s Axel Jungk. His third run was particularly impressive, setting a new track best of 55.63 seconds, expanding his lead to 0.39 seconds going into the final heat.

Weston maintained his composure under pressure, extending his victory margin to 0.88 seconds by the end of the competition. Axel Jungk claimed silver while Christopher Grotheer, also from Germany, took the bronze.

Reflecting on his achievement, Weston expressed the immense personal significance of the moment. “It means everything. I have worked so hard for this,” he said. “I’ve missed funerals, birthdays, everything to be here, and it feels amazing. Every sacrifice made by my family, friends, and fiancé has contributed to this moment. Even those supporting through the national lottery — thank you. I hope I made you proud.”

Weston’s victory not only ends Team GB’s medal drought at this Winter Olympics but also marks the first time a British man has won an Olympic gold medal in skeleton. It’s a monumental achievement for both Weston and British winter sports.
