Matt Weston Secures Historic Second Olympic Gold with Mixed Team Skeleton Victory

Matt Weston, hailing from Bath, has made Winter Olympics history by becoming the first British athlete to win two gold medals in skeleton racing at a single Games. His remarkable achievement came after an exhilarating mixed team skeleton event alongside teammate Tabitha Stoecker.

Stoecker set a strong foundation with a time of 1:00.77, putting the British pair just 0.30 seconds behind the leading German team. As the top-seeded duo and final runners, Weston knew the pressure was on. Rising to the occasion, he delivered a flawless and blistering 58.59-second run, securing his second gold medal of the Games following his victory in the Men’s individual skeleton event earlier in the week.

This win also marked a historic milestone for Great Britain, as the nation captured three gold medals at a single Winter Olympics for the first time. Earlier on Sunday, Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale made history with Great Britain’s first-ever snowboard cross mixed team gold.

Adding to the drama, another British duo, Marcus Wyatt and Freya Tarbit, narrowly missed out on a medal by just 0.01 seconds. The silver and bronze medals went to German teams led by Christopher Grotheer and Jacqueline Pfeifer, and Axel Jungk and Susanne Kreher, respectively.

Reflecting on the victory, Tabitha Stoecker told BBC Sport, “Thanks [Matt]. I can’t believe it. It’s a team effort and when Matt came down and we were in the green, I was just in shock.” Weston himself said, “Luckily I felt like I knew what I needed to do. I took a load of confidence from the individual event and I almost had to ‘be boring’ to get the job done and do it again.”

Matt Weston’s extraordinary performance not only cements his status as the world’s premier skeleton racer but also continues to elevate Team GB’s stature on the winter sports stage.
