Matt Weston Clinches European Gold as Skeleton Season Heats Up

Matt Weston continued his remarkable skeleton season by winning the opening men’s race of 2026 in St Moritz on Wednesday morning. The University of Bath-trained athlete secured his fourth gold in five competitions, demonstrating his dominance in the sport.

The event, originally scheduled for Winterberg, Germany, but postponed due to weather, saw Weston outperform a competitive field of 27 sliders. He clocked a combined time of 2 minutes 15.67 seconds over two runs, finishing more than 1.25 seconds ahead of Italy’s Amedeo Bagnis, who took silver. Bagnis was notably the runner-up to Weston at the 2023 World Championships held at the same venue.

Olympic Champion Christopher Grotheer claimed the bronze, finishing 1.5 seconds behind Weston, with all other competitors trailing by at least two seconds on the legendary St Moritz track.

Reflecting on his victory, Weston said, “It feels amazing to be back racing and pushing at 100 percent after the injury. The race felt good. I know I’ve still got things I can clean up, but I’m pretty happy with the overall feeling. We’ve been working on some different stuff leading up to Cortina, so it was good to see that showing well. We’ll get ready to go again, and I’m excited to see what we can do on Friday.”

Weston, 29, is on course to win his third consecutive Overall World Cup title. So far this season, he has amassed four golds and a silver, leading the standings by 150 points ahead of China’s Zheng Yin. With just two World Cup races remaining—one in St Moritz on Friday and another in Altenberg next week—Weston aims to continue his winning streak ahead of the Olympic Winter Games in Italy this coming February.

His teammate, Marcus Wyatt, maintained third place in the rankings after finishing seventh in St Moritz with a time of 2:17.95. Wyatt, the only other race winner this season, faces close competition from South Korea’s Seunggi Jun and Germany’s Axel Jungk, who trail him by three and seventeen points respectively.

Meanwhile, fellow Brit Jacob Salisbury finished 21st in 2:19.59, holding his position in the World Cup standings.
