Massive Factory Fire Erupts in Trowbridge, Sending Thick Smoke Into the Sky

A major fire erupted at a factory yard on Avon Way, Trowbridge, today, sending thick black smoke billowing high into the sky. The Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly after reports of a fire involving two lean-to structures filled with manufacturing waste and pallets.

The emergency call came in at 3:17 pm on April 28. Fire crews from Trowbridge, Warminster, Devizes, and Chippenham quickly arrived on the scene, supported by a water carrier from Wilton. Additional teams from Calne and Chippenham and a command unit from Pewsey were also dispatched.

Due to the severity of the fire, Canal Road was closed to ensure public safety and to allow unrestricted access for firefighting crews.

By 4:24 pm, firefighters were actively using two breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets, and two main jets to control the flames and prevent the fire from spreading. Authorities advised nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed to avoid the effects of the significant smoke plume.

At 5 pm, six fire crews continued their efforts, supported by a water carrier. On-site personnel operated machinery to create breaks in the waste, effectively containing the fire. The closure of Canal Road was maintained due to hoses running across the carriageway for access to hydrants.

As evening approached, by 7 pm, the response team scaled down to two crews from Warminster and Tisbury, along with the water carrier. Firefighters focused on tackling remaining hotspots and initiating dampening down procedures.

Officials confirmed that the fire is believed to have started accidentally and has been contained to two wooden buildings storing textiles, wood, and paper, preventing further spread.
