Massive Drug Seizure and Cash Recovery in South West England

Since the launch of Operation Scorpion, a joint mission across five police forces in the South West, authorities have been successful in making the region increasingly hostile towards drug dealers. With 629 arrests, 350 individuals safeguarded, and 3,272 drug operations disrupted, the operation has significantly reduced the prevalence of ‘county lines’ drug trafficking. The seized drugs, weighing the equivalent of two Arnold Schwarzeneggers (213kg), and the recovery of nearly £1 million in cash, underscore the success of the operation in combating drug-related crime.

Police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez has highlighted the positive impact of Operation Scorpion in removing drugs from the streets, protecting individuals from exploitation, and creating a safer environment for the community. The focus of the operation on addressing drug networks, antisocial behavior, and organized crime groups involved in drug production has proven to be particularly effective.

The commissioner also emphasized the need for a shift in police measures, moving away from merely focusing on the number of arrests to broader community safety and wellbeing. Additionally, attention was drawn to the importance of addressing the gateway drug issue, with a specific emphasis on the need for political support for improved drug treatment and education initiatives.

The relationship between drug use and mental health issues was also highlighted, with concerns over the lack of mental health care and waiting lists for children to receive professional assistance. Furthermore, the prevalence of vaping, particularly in schools, and the potential for cannabis and other drugs being introduced into vaping products were identified as areas of concern.

Looking ahead, there is a focus on the “clear, hold, build” partnership approach, where law enforcement clears problem areas of drugs, local authorities maintain the situation, and the community at large works towards being drug-free. With plans for the next phase of Operation Scorpion, the continued efforts to combat drug-related crimes are set to persist with a seventh operation planned for the upcoming spring.
