Mary Berry Shares Touching Promise to Her ‘Terribly Frail’ Husband After Nearly 60 Years of Marriage

Dame Mary Berry, beloved former judge of The Great British Bake Off, recently opened up about her personal life and her enduring commitment to her husband, Paul Hunnings, as she celebrated her 90th birthday in March. The milestone was marked with a heartfelt family gathering in her hometown of Bath.

Despite reaching an age when many consider retirement, Mary remains passionate about her career and determined to continue her work in the culinary world. Reflecting on her health, she describes herself as feeling “so lucky” to be in good shape and deeply grateful for having her husband by her side after nearly six decades of marriage.

In a touching interview with Yours Magazine, Mary revealed the delicate condition of her husband: “He’s terribly frail, but very cherished and well looked after. Just as I was leaving, I gave him a little plate of smoked salmon, a wedge of lemon, and I cut the crusts off the bread. And though he doesn’t have a drink with it, I’ll do the drinking when I get in.”

Mary also shared insights into her daily routine and approach to wellness. She identifies as “very much a morning person” who enjoys spending time outdoors. Influenced by her mother, who lived to the remarkable age of 105, Mary stays active with regular walks and maintains a mindful approach to eating. Though she loves her treats, especially cakes and biscuits, she practices moderation: “I eat what I enjoy, but I eat very carefully,” she chuckled. “A little of everything is good for you… moderation is key.”

Beyond her own lifestyle choices, Mary spoke of the deep satisfaction she finds in caring for Paul, now 93. “That’s what I promised to do—for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. And we are very happy in our dotage,” she reflected poignantly about their marriage vows.

The couple has had three children: their first son William, who sadly passed away in a car accident in 1989 at the age of 19, followed by their younger son Thomas and daughter Annabel. Annabel now plays an active role in supporting Mary’s family recipes and brand.

Mary Berry’s story is one of enduring love, resilience, and joyful dedication—to both her family and her craft.
