Mary Berry Embraces Busy Retirement, Says There’s ‘Plenty of Time to Rest in Heaven’

Mary Berry, the cherished former judge of The Great British Bake Off, shows no intention of winding down as she celebrates her 90th birthday this year. Rather than stepping back and taking it easy, Mary’s schedule remains packed with exciting new ventures.

Among her latest projects is the launch of her new cookbook, Mary 90, a collection that highlights her most treasured recipes. This culinary celebration will also be accompanied by a six-episode BBC series of the same name, set to air this autumn.

In addition to these, Mary will embark on a nationwide promotional tour, stopping in major cities including London, Henley, and Winchester, ensuring fans across the country can connect with her.

When asked about retirement in an interview with Yours Magazine, the Dame shared a candid perspective: “I’m very privileged to still be doing the work that I love. And I really don’t think about how old I am. I keep busy because that’s what I like to do. I’m not keen on lounging around at home and doing nothing. There’s plenty of time to rest in heaven.”

Earlier this year, Mary’s milestone birthday was celebrated with a special episode of The One Show dedicated entirely to her legacy. The heartfelt broadcast included warm messages from celebrities and even a personal greeting from Prince William.

Mary’s enduring vitality is rooted in her philosophy of healthy living and balanced eating. She advocates home-cooked, wholesome meals crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Rather than strict abstinence, Mary believes in moderation — especially when it comes to indulgent treats like cakes.

She also emphasizes mindful portion control and encourages listening to the body’s natural cues to avoid overeating. Outside the kitchen, Mary stays active through regular walks and croquet matches but balances this with ample rest.

This interview comes as The Great British Bake Off returns to audiences with a new season. Mary left the show in 2016 after seven years when it transitioned from the BBC to Channel 4, choosing loyalty to the original network. Reflecting on her time on the program, she said, “What a privilege and honour it has been to be part of seven years of magic in a tent. Farewell to soggy bottoms.”

Mary’s successor on the judging panel is Dame Prue Leith, who currently works alongside Paul Hollywood. The show’s presenting lineup has also evolved over the years, with Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond now hosting after Fred Matt Lucas stepped down in 2023.

As Mary Berry moves proudly into her tenth decade, she continues to inspire with her passion for food, wellness, and life itself.
