Marcus Trescothick, the Somerset cricket legend, will take charge of the England Test team as interim head coach for the upcoming series against Pakistan. This arrangement precedes the arrival of New Zealander Stephen Fleming, who will assume the role of England’s new Test head coach. Joe Root is set to return as England’s red-ball captain.
Stephen Fleming, a five-time Indian Premier League champion, will succeed Brendon McCullum, who was relieved of his coaching duties following England’s 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand in June-resulting in a disappointing Ashes campaign. Meanwhile, Ben Stokes stepped down as Test captain and retired from international cricket after England’s loss at Trent Bridge last month. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced yesterday that Root will take over the captaincy once more.
Root, who has captained England in 65 Tests, will focus fully on the red-ball format. This decision also allows all-format player Harry Brook to concentrate on leading England in white-ball cricket, ahead of next year’s World Cup.

The captaincy will resume under Root for the three-match Test series against Pakistan in August. However, Trescothick will act as interim head coach for this series, while Fleming remains in New Zealand to spend time with his family before travelling to the UK later in the summer. Fleming’s preparations will focus on the December Test tour to South Africa.
Fleming stated: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining England as Test coach. It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket, and I am honoured to be appointed.”
“I look forward to working with the players and building on the progress made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Our ambition is to win now while also ensuring the team is positioned well for the medium and long term. There is a lot of young talent in and around the team, and our aim is to help them fulfil their potential as world-class cricketers.”
“I’m particularly eager to work with Joe Root, a generational talent who has achieved so much already. There is still much more to come from him, and I intend to support him as he thrives in a different context than his previous captaincy spell.”

Fleming had a distinguished career as New Zealand’s Test captain, winning 28 matches. He also played alongside Brendon McCullum for six years. The two have maintained a positive relationship, co-founding the digital platform CricHQ in 2015. They were also coaching rivals in the IPL, with Fleming’s Chennai Super Kings defeating McCullum’s Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2021 final.
This existing rapport between Fleming and McCullum is a positive development for the ECB, following previous difficulties with the dual-head coach role.
Although Fleming has not coached at Test level before, he captained Nottinghamshire to County Championship glory in 2005 and recently led Southern Brave to The Hundred final three years ago. He impressed ECB officials during his interview process after Andy Flower withdrew his candidacy earlier this month.

“I believe he is the best person to guide a team full of potential and develop it into a world-class outfit capable of sustained success. I am excited about the prospect of him working with Joe Root, who can captain the team free from the Covid restrictions that affected his earlier tenure.”
Root led England to 27 Test wins in his first captaincy spell from 2017 to 2022.
Reflecting on his return as captain, Root said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England men’s Test captain again. The role is demanding but incredibly rewarding. After enjoying a brief spell working with Baz McCullum last month, I’m excited to lead this new generation of players.
“The opportunity to do this alongside Stephen Fleming is a huge motivation. He has proven over many years to be an exceptional leader with deep knowledge of the game, and I look forward to working with him to help build a winning culture.”
