Marcus Trescothick, the celebrated Somerset cricketer, will serve as England’s interim head coach for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. This interim arrangement comes as New Zealander Stephen Fleming prepares to take over as England’s new Test head coach, with Joe Root returning to his role as red-ball captain.
Stephen Fleming, a five-time Indian Premier League winner, is set to replace Brendon McCullum following McCullum’s dismissal after England’s 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand in June, which followed a challenging Ashes campaign. Meanwhile, Ben Stokes resigned as Test captain and retired from international cricket after England’s loss at Trent Bridge last month. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) subsequently confirmed Joe Root will resume the Test captaincy.
Root’s reinstatement, who has previously captained England in 65 Tests, allows all-format player Harry Brook to concentrate on white-ball captaincy ahead of next year’s World Cup. Root will lead England in the three-match Pakistan series this August, while Trescothick will act as interim head coach. Fleming remains in New Zealand to spend time with family before travelling to the UK later in the summer to prepare for the South Africa Test tour scheduled for December.

Fleming expressed his enthusiasm about the appointment: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining England as Test coach. It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honoured to be appointed. I look forward to working with the players and building on the progress made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes.”
He continued, “Our ambition is to win now but also to ensure the team is well positioned for the medium and long-term future. There is significant young talent in and around the team, and our aim is to help them reach their full potential as world-class cricketers.”
Fleming highlighted his eagerness to collaborate with Joe Root, praising him as a generational talent with much more to achieve. He also mentioned Harry Brook, saying, “Helping Harry continue to develop his extraordinary talent and leadership will be an important part of this journey.”
Drawing from his own experiences, Fleming reflected on the challenges of leadership and international cricket: “When I faced those pressures, my love for the game was rekindled by playing county cricket. English cricket gave that to me, and it’s a privilege to now have the opportunity to give something back.”
Fleming’s record as New Zealand’s Test captain is impressive, with 28 wins, and he played alongside McCullum for six years. Together, they co-founded the digital platform CricHQ in 2015 and were coaching rivals during the IPL, with Fleming’s Chennai Super Kings defeating McCullum’s Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2021 final.
The strong relationship between Fleming and McCullum may facilitate a smoother transition for the ECB after previous challenges with the co-head coach structure. Although Fleming has not previously coached in Test cricket, he captained Nottinghamshire to County Championship success in 2005 and led Southern Brave to The Hundred final three years ago.
Rob Key, director of England men’s cricket, praised Fleming’s appointment: “Stephen Fleming is one of the most highly respected figures in cricket. We are fortunate to have someone of his calibre as England men’s Test head coach. He is well placed to guide a talented team and transform it into a world-class outfit capable of sustained success.”
Key also expressed optimism about Fleming working with Joe Root, noting that Root will be able to lead without the Covid restrictions that affected the Test side during his previous tenure.
Joe Root welcomed his return as captain, saying, “It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England men’s Test captain again. The role is demanding but hugely rewarding. After a brief taste of captaincy alongside Baz McCullum last month, I’m excited to lead this next generation of players.”
He added, “Working with Stephen Fleming is a huge motivator. He has demonstrated exceptional leadership and cricket knowledge over a long period, and I look forward to building a winning environment alongside him.”
