Many Pensioners Are Missing Out on Up to £5,740 Annually from the DWP

Over one million pensioners living with health conditions could be missing out on up to £5,740 per year in extra financial support, according to research by MoneySavingExpert (MSE.com) and Policy in Practice. The consumer advice site, founded by Martin Lewis, reveals that Attendance Allowance is one of the most underclaimed welfare benefits in the UK, with an estimated 1.1 million eligible individuals potentially forfeiting a combined total of £5.2 billion annually.

MSE.com recently updated its comprehensive online guide on Attendance Allowance, aiming to clear up confusion about eligibility and simplify the claims process. This non-means-tested, tax-free benefit remains significantly underutilised despite being a vital source of financial support for those above State Pension age.

The dedicated MSE page includes practical information, video clips from the Martin Lewis Money Show, and real-life stories from people who have successfully applied on their own behalf or for family members. For example, one user, Christine, shared how she applied for Attendance Allowance for her husband and quickly received payments exceeding their expectations, along with approval for a Blue Badge—all thanks to MSE’s guidance.

Currently, more than 1.7 million people over State Pension age across Great Britain, including 155,000 in Scotland, receive up to £441 each month through Attendance Allowance or the Scottish Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP). These benefits operate independently from the State Pension and other welfare programs, offering additional financial support for older adults living with disabilities, long-term health conditions, or mental health challenges.

Attendance Allowance and PADP provide weekly payments at two rates: a standard rate of £73.90 or an enhanced rate of £110.40. Paid every four weeks, this totals either £295.60 or £441.60 per payment cycle. Over the course of a year, eligible pensioners could receive up to £5,740 to help cover the extra costs associated with their conditions.

The purpose of these benefits is to help pensioners manage daily living expenses related to health needs and maintain independence in their own homes for longer. However, it’s important to note that neither Attendance Allowance nor PADP includes a mobility component.

Pensioners who believe they might qualify are encouraged to check the updated guidance and apply promptly to secure the support they deserve.
