Managing Tourism in Bath: Challenges and Opportunities

Bath, with a population just shy of 100,000, has been revealed as the most overcrowded UK city with tourists. Known globally for its stunning architecture, universities, and rich history, Bath is unique in being the only city in the world that is entirely a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Each year, vast numbers of tourists flock to Bath to soak up its renowned attractions such as the ancient Roman baths and to stroll through its picturesque streets. However, these streets can become rather congested, particularly during the tourist season.

As summer draws near, the influx of visitors from outside Bath into the city steadily increases, with local hotels, eateries, and pubs bracing themselves for a busy period.

While Bath’s residents recognize the advantages tourism brings to their city, it’s not without its challenges, as some have shared. The primary issue with Bath’s high levels of tourism is the surge in properties being converted into Airbnbs, according to lifelong resident Benjamin Head.

Benjamin is convinced that Bath needs to implement a tourist tax akin to European cities like Venice and Vienna.

Further commenting, he said: “Right now we have all the downsides of high council tax, with specific services being weighted towards tourism. We have to put a lot more effort into bins and all that sort of stuff.”

Nevertheless, he acknowledges the positive impact of tourism on Bath, explaining: “You take the tourists away, you will lose a lot of the restaurants and things we residents get to enjoy.”

The hot topic of introducing a tourist tax or handling the abundance of Airbnbs in the city of Bath was recently discussed during a local housing issues hustings. Concerns were voiced about the impact of short term lets on the housing stock in the city center.

Despite these concerns, many residents believe that existing with tourists is an integral part of the core Bath lifestyle and recognize the vibrancy they bring to the city. However, the challenges of navigating the city during weekends due to the throngs of tourists have been highlighted as well.

The tourism sector forms an indispensable part of Bath’s economy, and it’s recognized that while tourism is vital to Bath’s economy and heritage, the challenges associated with high visitor numbers need to be addressed proactively to ensure a sustainable future for the city, benefiting both its residents and visitors.

In conclusion, despite the challenges increased tourist numbers may pose to the locals in Bath, it appears that many have accepted it as part of their reality, with some even welcoming the advantages it brings.
