Entrepreneur Johnny Palmer, famously known for driving a Boeing 727 down the M5 motorway, has launched a unique sauna experience on his private island near Bath. The Aether Sauna opened last weekend at the popular wild swimming spot of Warleigh Weir and immediately sold out all sessions, signaling a strong demand for this luxurious new venture.
Palmer, who acquired the island in 2017, describes the sauna as a “revolutionary concept that marries 5-star spa luxury with the raw beauty of wild swimming in an entirely off-grid setting.” The sauna follows the traditional Aufguss style, which enhances the heat with essential oils, music, and lighting to deliver a deeply relaxing 15-minute ritual.
“Bringing Aufguss to the UK’s iconic wild swimming spot is a real delight,” Palmer said. “My goal has always been to make this island accessible and enjoyable to the public, not to commercialize it. Introducing the sauna is the perfect way to complement the swimming experience for everyone.”

Palmer’s exploits have made him a local legend. In 2021, he captured public attention by driving a jumbo jet down a busy motorway and later converting the plane into a unique Airbnb lodging. “I’ve loved airplanes since childhood, growing up on a farm in Tasmania,” he remarked. “Manifesting those dreams into reality has been incredible.”
Warleigh Weir, nestled on the River Avon between Bath and Bradford-on-Avon, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and vibrant swimming community. However, visitors should exercise caution. The site requires crossing train tracks without a formal crossing, and there are no lifeguards present. Additionally, the weir’s strong currents and occasional water contamination pose safety risks.
For those interested, Aether Sauna sessions can be booked online, offering an exclusive gateway to relaxation combined with the serene outdoors.
