Man Walks 100 Miles in Wooden Shoes to Honor His Late Father

Mark Vaughan, a passionate history enthusiast, embarked on an extraordinary 100-mile walk wearing traditional wooden shoes to honor the memory of his late father, David. Inspired by the 340th anniversary of the Monmouth Rebellion, Mark recreated the arduous journey of the Duke of Monmouth, donning authentic 17th-century attire, including a woollen uniform and leather and wooden shoes, while carrying a decommissioned musket from that era.

This impressive feat, completed over five intense summer days, was motivated by the exceptional care Mark’s father received from Hospiscare during his final days. “As Dad’s condition worsened, the hospice was a constant support for Mum and me — they could not have done more,” Mark shared.

Hospiscare supports over 2,200 patients and their families annually but receives only 24% of its funding from the government. It relies heavily on generous individuals like Mark to help sustain its vital services.

Mark aimed to raise £1,000 but was thrilled to present Hospiscare with a donation of £3,219.39 — more than triple his original goal. The journey was not without challenges. The unforgiving wooden shoes caused severe blisters, and the weight of the musket taxed his shoulders. Yet, the encouragement from the community kept him going. Kind strangers stopped to offer water, snacks, and words of support, while passing drivers honked and cheered him on.

“Having Hospiscare was critical for our family during Dad’s struggle,” Mark reflected. “I’m proud to have completed this challenge in his memory and to give back to such a wonderful organization.”

Looking ahead, Mark is already planning his next historical fundraiser for Hospiscare in 2026, teasing a week-long trench experience in full World War I gear.
