Man Sentenced to Five Years for Sexual Assault and Possession of Thousands of Child Abuse Images

Kevin Geoffrey Thompson, a 61-year-old man from Weston-super-Mare, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman and possessing over 4,200 category A indecent images of children—the most severe classification.

Following information received from another law enforcement agency, police searched Thompson’s address and seized his mobile phone. Analysis revealed an extensive collection of indecent photographs and videos involving children, amassed over an eight-year period. Among these was a category A video estimated to be over an hour in length.

The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, provided a victim impact statement read to the court. She described the ongoing trauma she faces, including worsening mental health, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and feelings of constant insecurity, emphasizing the lasting effect of Thompson’s abuse.

Thompson pleaded guilty to six charges, including sexual assault and possession of category A child abuse images. Along with his prison sentence handed down at Bristol Crown Court on June 5, he received a 10-year restraining order and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He has also been placed on the sex offenders register.

The investigating officer commended the courage of the victim for coming forward despite her ordeal, highlighting the importance of reporting sexual offenses, regardless of how much time has passed. This case underscores that offenders can be brought to justice when victims report their experiences.
