Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Kidnap of Teenage Girl Walking Home from Work

A 27-year-old man has admitted to attempting to kidnap a 17-year-old girl as she walked home from work in Swindon. Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam, a Sudanese national residing on Stanier Street, appeared at Swindon Crown Court on Tuesday, October 14, where he pleaded guilty to the offense.

The incident took place on the evening of March 6 around 9:30 pm, near Fleming Way on Princes Street. Adam approached the teenager unwillingly and followed her as she walked toward the junction. Terrified, the girl tried to attract attention by flagging down passing vehicles. When she crossed the road at traffic lights, Adam ran after her, grabbed her from behind, and pulled her back across the street.

Fortunately, members of the public on a nearby bus witnessed the attack and intervened, forcing Adam to flee down Princes Street. He then tried to engage and follow another woman, who managed to escape. He later followed a female witness to the initial attempt, but public intervention once again prevented further harm.

The victim’s mother reported the incident to the police the same night. Wiltshire Police swiftly arrested Adam, who initially refused to cooperate with the authorities. Following an investigation, he was charged with attempted kidnap and remanded in custody, awaiting sentencing on December 12.

Detective Constable Anna McCormack of Swindon CID praised the victim’s courage, acknowledging the traumatic nature of the event. She also commended the bystanders whose quick actions likely prevented a worse outcome.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Dale Sheehan emphasized the community’s right to safety, highlighting the critical role of public assistance and evidence in securing the conviction. “Violence against women and girls will not be tolerated,” Sheehan stated, underscoring the Crown Prosecution Service’s commitment to justice for victims.

Adam remains in custody as he awaits his sentencing later this year.
