Man on Trial for the Death of His Four-Week-Old Son in Somerset

A trial has begun for Tony Bartlett, a 39-year-old man from Axminster, Devon, who faces charges of murder and manslaughter in connection with the death of his four-week-old son, Atticus Bartlett. The case is being heard at Bristol Crown Court.

On June 11, a jury composed of six men and six women was sworn in to hear the sensitive and distressing case. Atticus was rushed to hospital from his home in Chard, Somerset, in a critical condition late on July 16, 2022. Despite medical efforts, the baby passed away on July 23.

During the jury swearing-in, Mr Justice Cavanagh informed the court that the prosecution would open the case the following day. He emphasized the sensitive nature of the trial and cautioned that some evidence might be distressing. Although the exact length of the trial cannot be precisely determined, it is expected to last up to five weeks.

The prosecution team is led by Charles Row KC and Sarah Jenkins, while Nigel Power KC and Ian Morrell represent Bartlett, who denies all charges. Avon and Somerset Police responded to the emergency call from paramedics on the night of July 16, and the investigation led to these serious allegations.

The trial continues as the jury begins to hear the case presented by both sides.
