Man Jailed After Police Firearm Discharge in Yeovil Incident

A man has been sentenced after a police officer discharged a firearm during an incident in Yeovil. The event unfolded on March 23, when armed officers were dispatched to Rosebery Avenue at around 1:51 pm after reports surfaced of a man allegedly carrying what appeared to be a handgun.

Police engaged with the man on Monmouth Road shortly afterward, during which an officer fired a weapon. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

In a recent update from Avon and Somerset Police on July 3, authorities confirmed that William Martin, 38, of Monmouth Road, pleaded guilty in April to possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He was sentenced on June 5 at Taunton Crown Court to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years.

Initially, a 16-year-old boy and another man were also arrested in connection with the incident in March. However, Avon and Somerset Police have since confirmed that these individuals, along with a third person arrested, have been released with no further action taken.

A police spokesperson stated: “In April at Taunton Crown Court, William Martin, 38, of Monmouth Road in Yeovil, pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He was sentenced on 5 June to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years. The other three people arrested during our investigation were released with no further action.”
