Martin Clayton, 73, has been sentenced to over three years in prison after deliberately setting fire to his rented home in Mere, Wiltshire, causing a powerful explosion that endangered lives and devastated the property. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 16, 2024, when Clayton poured petrol around the living room and ignited it, resulting in a blast that alarmed neighbours on Caddy Lane.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, including Wiltshire Police, South Western Ambulance Service Trust, and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue. Thanks to the prompt actions of alert residents who called for help, no injuries were reported, although the damage was severe enough to require the home’s complete reconstruction.
Footage captured by police body-worn cameras reveals the extent of the destruction officers encountered once the fire was extinguished. Clayton was found inside the property unharmed but faced charges of arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered. Initially pleading not guilty, he later changed his plea to guilty before his trial.

In sentencing on April 21 at Salisbury Crown Court, the court imposed a term of three years and one month. Detective Constable Martyn Powell of Wiltshire Police emphasized the grave risks Clayton’s actions posed not only to himself but also to neighbours and emergency responders who bravely attended the scene.
DC Powell expressed gratitude toward the neighbours who alerted authorities, as well as the coordinated efforts of police, fire, and ambulance crews that prevented further harm. He also extended sympathy to the property owner, who has suffered significant distress and financial loss because of the incident.
Ant Bholah, Area Manager for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue, highlighted the critical importance of inter-agency cooperation during such emergencies. The fire service continues to support ongoing recovery and investigation efforts, recognizing the profound impact on all affected parties.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved when reckless actions put lives and communities at risk.
