Man in His 70s Convicted of Multiple Child Sex Offences Spanning Over Two Decades

Michael Barker, aged 71 and currently residing in Albert Hill, Durham, has been found guilty of nine child sex offences committed between 1974 and 1997. The offences took place at various locations including Swindon, Chippenham, and Bishop Auckland.

Following a trial at Swindon Crown Court, Barker was convicted on six counts of indecent assault, two counts of rape, and one count of gross indecency with a child. The victims were girls known to Barker, whom they trusted.

Detective Constable Nicola Ainsley of Wiltshire Police commended the bravery of the victims, stating, “The courage shown by the victims in coming forward, despite the trauma they endured, has been vital in securing this conviction. This case highlights the importance of reporting sexual offences, no matter how much time has passed.”

She described Barker as “an abhorrent individual” who violated the safety of young girls in their own homes, inflicting lasting harm. Barker’s offences escalated over the years, and even after being charged, he denied the allegations, leading to a trial that caused further distress to his victims.

DC Ainsley added, “While this conviction cannot erase the trauma suffered, we hope it offers the victims some measure of closure and the chance to rebuild their lives. Barker will face sentencing in due course.”

Barker’s sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place at a later date.
