Man in 70s Dies After Being Blown Into Yacht During Windsurfing Incident in Dorset

A tragic windsurfing accident has claimed the life of a man in his 70s at Portland Harbour, Dorset. The man is believed to have been swept out of the water by strong winds and collided with a moored yacht.

Emergency first aid was promptly administered by harbour staff and members of the RNLI, but sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second individual involved in the incident was treated by paramedics and remains under medical care.

Dorset Police confirmed they received a report at 1:52 pm on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, about two men in distress in the water near Portland Harbour. They said, “One man, aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious, and his family has been informed. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”

Weymouth RNLI also provided a statement: “A yacht anchored in the harbour reported a kite surfer in difficulty to the Coastguard. The man was brought ashore where harbour staff and RNLI crew administered first aid, but he was sadly pronounced dead on scene by a doctor.”

This incident highlights the dangers of watersports, especially in challenging conditions, and serves as a somber reminder to exercise caution on the water.
