Man Imprisoned After Setting Fire That Razed Wiltshire Rental Home

A 73-year-old man was sentenced to over three years in prison after deliberately igniting a fire that caused a destructive explosion in his rented home in Mere, Wiltshire. Martin Clayton poured petrol around the living room of the property before setting it ablaze, endangering nearby residents and emergency responders.

On the early morning of December 16, 2024, neighbors on Caddy Lane were jolted awake by the blast’s thunderous noise and promptly alerted emergency services. The incident triggered a swift and large-scale response involving Wiltshire Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, and South Western Ambulance Service Trust.

Police body-camera footage captured the extensive devastation left in the fire’s aftermath. Despite the blaze, Clayton was found unharmed inside the residence. The damage was so severe that the property required complete rebuilding, with ongoing assessments continuing.

Detective Constable Martyn Powell underscored the gravity of Clayton’s recklessness: “His actions not only threatened his own life but also the safety of neighbors and first responders. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.” He also commended the neighbors for their quick thinking and emergency calls that helped minimize damage.

Clayton initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea before trial. He was convicted of arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and sentenced on April 21 at Salisbury Crown Court.

DC Powell expressed sympathy for the homeowner, who suffered significant distress and financial loss. He further praised the emergency teams for their bravery and professionalism in a challenging situation, noting the exemplary collaboration among police, fire, and ambulance services.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue’s area manager, Ant Bholah, highlighted the critical importance of joint efforts between agencies to manage such incidents safely and efficiently. Recovery and investigative support continue for those affected, acknowledging the profound impact on residents, property owners, and responders alike.
