Man Convicted of Historic Sexual Abuse Against 13-Year-Old Boy

Stefon Winter, 73, formerly of Goatacre, Calne, has been found guilty of historic sexual offences against a 13-year-old boy. The convictions, which include two counts of buggery and three counts of indecent assault, relate to crimes committed in the 1980s and were delivered at Swindon Crown Court.

Due to the time frame of the offences, Winter was charged and convicted under legislation applicable to that period. This case underscores the message that justice remains attainable regardless of how much time has passed since the abuse.

Detective Constable Chris McLoughlin emphasized the significance of the verdict: “This case is an important reminder that justice can still be served years after abuse has occurred. Victims considering coming forward should know that a delay in reporting does not mean they won’t be heard or believed. Our specialist officers provide support throughout the process, no matter when the crime took place. I hope this outcome encourages others to speak out.”

He also praised the victim for their courage in reporting the abuse, calling it a “display of immense strength, character, and resilience.” The detective added, “Thanks to this bravery, Stefon Winter will serve a significant prison sentence, enhancing the safety of our communities. Hopefully, this sentence will offer the victim some closure, allowing them to move forward.”

Winter is scheduled to be sentenced on July 31 at Swindon Crown Court. This sentencing will also cover two counts of digital penetration involving a 5-year-old child in the late 1980s, for which he was found guilty in 2023. Following the previous trial, Winter was remanded in custody and has awaited this latest verdict before sentencing.
