Human remains discovered in the Roemead Road area of Gurney Slade late on the night of January 14 are believed to be those of 40-year-old Craig Hurcombe from Wiltshire, who had been reported missing. Formal identification is pending, but police have informed his next of kin and are providing ongoing support.
Michael Bretton, 40, of Armoury Road, Shaftesbury, Dorset, has been charged with murder and two counts of stalking involving fear of violence against women. He appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody ahead of his upcoming hearing at Bristol Crown Court.
Local representatives have expressed their sympathy and support. Edric Hobbs, Liberal Democrat councillor for Mendip Hills, extended condolences to the victim’s family and thanked law enforcement for their swift work. Anna Sabine, Lib Dem MP for Frome and East Somerset, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the seriousness of the incident and backing the police investigation fully.

Avon and Somerset Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the circumstances of the death following prior police contact. Detective Chief Inspector Neil Meade stated that the family continues to receive support from specially trained officers and requested privacy on their behalf. He also praised the collaborative efforts of police forces across Avon and Somerset, Wiltshire, and Dorset.
While inquiries remain ongoing, police reassured the public that there is no current risk to the community. A Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been established online, encouraging anyone with information or footage related to the case to come forward.
