Man Charged with Murder After Human Remains Discovered in Gurney Slade

Human remains found in Gurney Slade’s Roemead Road area late on January 14 are believed to be those of 40-year-old Craig Hurcombe from Wiltshire, who had been reported missing. While formal identification is pending, police have informed his next of kin who are receiving ongoing support.

Michael Bretton, 40, of Shaftesbury, Dorset, has been charged with murder and two counts of stalking involving fear of violence against a woman. He appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court and has been remanded in custody pending a hearing at Bristol Crown Court.

Local representatives expressed their condolences and gratitude to the police. Councillor Edric Hobbs, representing Mendip Hills, said: “My condolences go to Craig’s family and friends. Thanks to the police for their swift and thorough work.”

Anna Sabine, MP for Frome and East Somerset, added: “This is a tragic incident, and my thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones. I support the police fully in their ongoing investigation.”

Avon and Somerset Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the death following previous police contact. Detective Chief Inspector Neil Meade conveyed his sympathy to the family, emphasizing their privacy and thanking them for their cooperation.

He also praised the combined efforts of police forces in Avon and Somerset, Wiltshire, and Dorset in bringing charges to fruition. Meade reassured the community, stating there is no current risk to public safety.

A Major Incident Public Portal has been established by Avon and Somerset Police for witnesses to submit information or footage related to the investigation.
