A man in his 20s has been arrested by police in Sussex as part of an investigation into the assault and rape of a woman in Wellington during the early hours of May 22. The suspect was detained approximately 150 miles from the scene and remains in custody on suspicion of rape.
The victim reported that she was punched and raped around 2:20 a.m. in the North Street area of Wellington. After the attack, the assailant fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Golf. The woman received medical treatment at a hospital and was released, with specialist officers providing ongoing support.
Detective Inspector Wendy Fellowes, part of Avon & Somerset Police’s Operation Bluestone— a unit dedicated to investigating serious sexual offences—expressed gratitude towards the public for submitting CCTV and other footage related to the incident. She urged residents to review any recordings taken from areas including Waterloo Road, North Street, High Street, Fore Street, or Taunton Road between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on May 22.
