A tragic explosion at a residential property in Frenchay, Bristol, has claimed the lives of a man and a woman, while injuring three others, including a child. The blast occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. following a domestic-related incident reported to Avon and Somerset Police just minutes earlier.
According to Superintendent Matt Ebbs, officers were dispatched to Sterncourt Road around 6:17 a.m. when the explosion took place inside the home before their arrival. The deceased individuals have been identified as residents of the property, and their families are receiving support from specially trained police officers.
Three survivors—a man, a woman, and a child—were rushed to hospital with minor injuries. All five were inside the property at the time of the explosion.

The police are treating the incident as suspicious and have declared it a major incident. Despite thorough investigations, authorities have confirmed that no further suspects are being sought, and the explosion is not linked to terrorism.
To ensure public safety and facilitate ongoing inquiries, a police cordon remains in place in the Frenchay area, expected to last until at least the evening. Residents within the cordon were evacuated to a temporary rest center, and officials appreciate their cooperation amid unavoidable disruptions.
Parallel inquiries are also underway at a related property in Speedwell associated with the deceased man, though no evacuations have been necessary there.
Superintendent Ebbs emphasized the commitment of emergency services, the British Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, and Bristol City Council in managing the complex investigation with sensitivity. Neighbourhood Policing Teams will continue patrols to offer reassurance to the affected community.
This remains an ongoing investigation, and updates will be provided as new information emerges.
