In a troubling incident that has stirred community concern, Rosa Tennant, 32, of The Hill, Little Somerford, has been sentenced following attacks by her out-of-control XL Bully. The dog escaped from her property in July 2024, receiving a warning at that time, yet again escaped in November 2024, this time without any lead, collar, or muzzle, resulting in an attack on a man and his spaniel who was on a lead.
The XL Bully’s attack left both the man and his dog with lasting physical injuries and psychological trauma. Police swiftly intervened, seizing the dog and placing it in secure kennels. Pending appeal, authorities have scheduled the dog for humane euthanasia to prevent further harm.
Investigations revealed that Tennant breached the conditions of her DEFRA certificate of exemption, despite previous warnings that her property’s security measures were inadequate. Additionally, she failed to report the attack to the authorities. Tennant pleaded guilty to charges of owning a dog dangerously out of control causing injury, and possession of a fighting dog, as American XL Bully breeds violate exemption clauses.

PC Paul Croft from the Dangerous Dogs team emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, “The law regarding banned breeds and exemption certificates exists to safeguard the public. We acted promptly to protect the community and will continue to enforce these laws rigorously.” He further criticized Tennant’s lack of remorse and accountability for the incident.
On October 3, 2024, Tennant was sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £477 in compensation and £1,500 in kennel fees. The community hopes this decisive action will prevent future incidents and reinforce the important responsibility of dog owners to maintain control of potentially dangerous animals.
