Major Somerset Quarry Approved to Operate Until 2056 Following Expansion

Moons Hill Quarry, a key supplier of silurian andesite in Somerset, has received approval to continue operating until 2056 after plans to expand its boundaries were greenlit by Somerset Council’s strategic planning committee.

Located near Stoke St. Michael, just northeast of Shepton Mallet, the quarry is managed by John Wainwright & Co. Ltd. Silurian andesite from this site is essential for road surfacing projects across Somerset and southern England, making the quarry a critical infrastructure supplier.

Previously licensed to operate only until 2042 within its original footprint, the quarry will now extend westward by 16.63 hectares (over 41 acres) into adjacent fields near Knapps Farm, close to Old Frome Road and the grade two listed Waggon and Horses public house. This land, designated as “poor quality” by Defra due to its severe agricultural limitations, was deemed suitable for the expansion.

The extension will be developed in four phases over 27 years beginning around 2029, with an estimated extraction of 18.82 million tonnes of silurian andesite—about 700,000 tonnes annually. Existing infrastructure will provide access through one of three points on Long Cross Bottom Road, keeping heavy vehicle traffic consolidated within current entry routes.

Moons Hill Quarry currently employs 120 people directly, alongside an additional 60 hauliers and 20 contractors. The expansion is projected to protect around 200 local jobs, maintaining a vital source of employment in the region.

Peter Barkwill, chairman of John Wainwright & Co., emphasized the company’s longstanding local commitment: “Since 1897, we’ve employed generations and contributed positively to the local economy and environment. Environmental sustainability remains central to our operations.”

Local representatives expressed strong support for the decision. Councillor Barry Clarke highlighted the quarry’s integral role in the local economy and praised successful land restoration projects led by the company. Councillor Edric Hobbs also endorsed the expansion, noting the economic necessity of andesite quarrying despite his personal appreciation of the Mendip Hills landscape.

With unanimous committee approval, Moons Hill Quarry’s expansion ensures continued supply of a vital construction resource while supporting local employment for the coming decades.
