Extensive roadworks are set to commence in Clevedon this week, aiming to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. The scheme includes a traffic flow adjustment, a new pedestrian crossing, and the installation of two new bus shelters. Work begins today, 3 August, and is anticipated to continue until the end of the year.
North Somerset Council highlights that these changes form part of a broader initiative designed to encourage sustainable travel choices and enhance the town’s public transport infrastructure.
Cabinet member for highways and transport, Cllr Hugh Malyan, commented: “These improvements are a key part of our Bus Service Improvement Plan, which aims to make public transport more reliable, accessible, and attractive for everyone.

“Clevedon’s new hub, along with others across North Somerset, will provide better facilities for passengers and encourage more sustainable travel choices.”
The project involves redirecting all traffic to the right-hand side of the clocktower, with the existing bus stop on Old Street being relocated to the left-hand side. Realignment of the kerb line will facilitate two-way traffic flow.
Additionally, the X10 bus route will now extend service to upper Clevedon, operating between The Triangle and the seafront, before completing a short loop through Walton Park.
The scheme also includes the addition of a new loading bay, a parking space, and a pedestrian crossing on Old Street at the site of the former bus stop. New bus shelters will be erected on Kenn Road and in The Triangle, complemented by new benches and improved cycling facilities.
Some of the benches installed will be ‘happy to chat’ benches, designed to combat loneliness by inviting passers-by to engage in conversation with those seated.
These roadworks are part of a larger project across North Somerset, which encompasses plans to upgrade 150 bus stops and shelters, implement new bus lanes, and introduce more affordable bus fares.
