Wiltshire Council is set to commence a significant upgrade of the Longfield Gyratory in Trowbridge this July. This extensive five-phase project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve access, particularly in support of the upcoming leisure centre currently being built on the East Wing site at County Hall.
The improvements will expand the gyratory’s capacity, enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and ensure smoother traffic flow. By staging the work in phases, the council hopes to minimize disruption to daily commuters.
Key elements of the upgrade include widening sections of the carriageway to better accommodate larger vehicles, modernizing traffic signals with advanced controllers, and refurbishing signal lights at the Tesco junction on County Way. This refurbishment will integrate the signals into one cohesive system for improved connectivity throughout the area.

A new signal-controlled junction will be created to manage traffic entering and exiting the new leisure centre. This junction will incorporate dedicated pedestrian and cyclist crossings, as well as additional lanes between the access point and the gyratory to handle increased vehicle volumes.
Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Transport, stated: “These crucial upgrades will support the new leisure centre while providing enduring benefits for all road users in Trowbridge.
“We apologise for any inconvenience the phased construction may cause but have carefully planned the schedule to reduce disruption as much as possible.
“All improvements have been developed with future growth in mind, using traffic projections up to 2041 to ensure the gyratory remains efficient and safe long into the future.
“Our commitment is to create a transport network that is safer, more efficient, and accessible for everyone, and these works are a vital step toward achieving that.”
Work will begin with strengthening Cradle Bridge and refurbishing the Tesco traffic signals, setting the stage for the broader improvements to follow.
