A significant revamp to improve pedestrian and cyclist access and optimize traffic flow at a junction in Somerset has been granted approval by planners. The proposed enhancements will be implemented at the A369 Rownham Hill junction with Bridge Road and Ashton Court.
The approved changes, influenced by community feedback, will feature new smart traffic signals, updated bus stops and shelters, and improved walking and cycling links. Following a six-week public consultation in spring 2024 and additional traffic monitoring and surveys, a previous proposal for bus lanes in both directions of the A369 has been eliminated from the plan.
The junction upgrades aim to enhance traffic flow, bus travel, and passenger facilities, with Cllr Hannah Young, Executive Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, noting that the modernized traffic signals, crossings, and pedestrian and cycling routes will contribute to improved functionality and support sustainable and active forms of travel. She expressed gratitude to the participants of the consultation for their input in shaping the scheme for the local area.

The A369 Rownham Hill scheme will be financed by the UK government through the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) as part of a broader strategy to enhance North Somerset’s strategic road network. The funding limitations stipulate that it cannot be allocated to non-BSIP related council activities or services.
