A large fire that devastated a warehouse at the Saxonvale site in Frome has been declared deliberate by Avon and Somerset Police, who have launched an arson investigation.
The fire erupted on Wednesday, July 1, around 3pm at the Western Warehouse, where more than 100 firefighters from Somerset, Dorset, and Wiltshire worked tirelessly to contain the intense flames. Adjacent buildings, including the Silk Mill and the former Notts Industries office, were evacuated to ensure public safety and prevent the fire from spreading.
Police confirmed the fire is being treated as suspicious, with no indication that anyone was inside the derelict building at the time. A spokesperson stated, “Police on Frome We supported the fire service at the scene of a fire involving derelict buildings in Saxonvale, Frome, at around 3.40pm on Wednesday (1 July). The fire is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is underway.”

The blaze caused significant damage, with approximately 80% of the warehouse destroyed by fire and the rest by smoke. The roof collapsed during the incident. Fire crews remained on site overnight to monitor for flare-ups while the cause continues to be examined.
Somerset Council expressed gratitude for the prompt action of emergency services and confirmed there were no injuries. The council noted, “The site remains under the control of the emergency services while investigations continue. Fire investigators, Somerset Council officers, and police are collaboratively working to determine the fire’s cause and assess the structural integrity of the affected buildings.”
